Google has just taken a new step in democratizing artificial intelligence by quietly launching an experimental application called AI Edge Gallery. This app allows anyone to download and use AI models directly on their smartphone, without an internet connection.

Generative AI within reach

With AI Edge Gallery, Google transforms the smartphone into a true AI laboratory. The app provides access to a selection of models from the Hugging Face platform, some developed by Google (such as Gemma) and others by major industry players. Users can generate images, chat with a chatbot, analyze photos or even code, all locally.

Three key features

  • AI Chat: a conversational assistant capable of answering all kinds of questions, even offline.
  • Ask Image: a feature that analyzes images and photos to provide descriptions, identify objects or solve problems, without data leaving the device.
  • Prompt Lab: a space to generate code, summarize or rewrite texts, translate, or test custom prompts, with the ability to choose the model and adjust parameters.

Privacy and autonomy

One of the strengths of this application lies in privacy. All processed data remains on the phone: no information is sent to the cloud. This ensures enhanced security, while allowing you to use the features even without network access.

Models optimized for mobile

The proposed models are optimized to run on mobile devices: they are lighter and less resource-intensive than those used in the cloud. This sometimes implies slightly lower performance, but users can choose the model best suited to their needs and their device’s power.

An app still reserved for enthusiasts

For now, AI Edge Gallery is not available on the Play Store. This is an alpha version that must be manually installed via an APK file available on GitHub. The application currently targets AI enthusiasts and developers, who are invited to provide feedback to improve the tool. You also need to plan for substantial storage space: each model can take up between 1 and 3 GB.

A step towards local AI for everyone

With AI Edge Gallery, Google lays the groundwork for freer, more private and decentralized AI usage. This approach could well transform access to AI, giving everyone the ability to benefit from its advantages without relying on the cloud or sacrificing their privacy. A still experimental project, but promising for the future of AI on mobile.
